Utilizing infrastructure in South Korea for the upcoming ‘Greener Cars’ era.
CJ Logistics, one of the leading logistics companies in South Korea, is recently putting their attention to ‘Green Logistics’.
From this year, CJ Logistics is planning to use electric vehicles in parcel deliveries and grow related infrastructure which can be analyzed as the company’s effort to reduce fine dust and carbon emission.
According to the news from the related industry, CJ Logistics will be making changes in the articles of association in coming a regular general meeting of stockholders on March 25th. They decided to add ‘Operation of Electric Vehicle and Related Charging Infrastructure, Management Service’ into their new business goal. CJ Logistics officials explained “Nothing has been decided yet specifically”, “Currently, we are at the planning stage”. The official also added, “There will be various opportunity to run related businesses”.
In a parcel service business, diesel cars and trucks are mainly used and mostly it is driven around downtown areas which leads to high carbon emission. According to the parcel delivery industry, the quantity of carbon emission from a 1-ton weighted truck a year is around 100 thousand.
The reduction of the carbon emission is imperative in the logistics industry and CJ Logistics is investing and researching in the related field. Among this atmosphere, The Ministry of Land came with the compulsory attachment of ‘Carbon Reduction Device Label’ policy which starts from next month following the government’s ‘Eco-Friendly Policy’.
CJ Logistics has been preparing ‘Green Logistics’. Since November of 2016, CJ has been using two 0.5 ton electric vehicles in parcel deliveries in Jeju Island to see the application possibility. In addition, in September of 2016, CJ had made ‘Business Agreement for Promoting Industry and Supply of Electric Vehicle’ with Gwangju Metropolitan City and Joylong Automobile Korea.
Through this effort, CJ Logistics has chosen as ‘The Best Company for Green Logistics’ from the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.
The benefits that CJ receives as the best company for green logistics are priority fund support of eco-friendly logistics activity and having a priority of moving into national/local governmental distribution faculties, receiving support when entering into the global market etc.
As seen above, CJ will be getting all the support and grow its electric vehicle-related infrastructure.
The main focus of the market is how to expand the infrastructure. CJ should partner with a car manufacturer to make this business possible and which car manufacturer that CJ will choose is what it matters. As of now, Hyundai/Kia Motors is highly possible because 1-ton trucks that parcel delivery companies mainly use is Hyundai ‘Porter’ and Hyundai Motors will be presenting the electric version of Porter(Project name: HR EV) in the begging of the next year as to expand commercial vehicle market.
Adopting electric vehicle in the delivery industry is already a world trend. DHL has acquired Street Scooter, the electric vehicle manufacturer, and distributed 7 thousand electric vehicles and planning to replace current 45 thousand vehicles to electric vehicles. FedEx and UPS are partially running hybrid electric vehicles(HEV). It appears that other parcel delivery companies will accelerate to adopt electric vehicles in their business.
Meanwhile, CJ Logistics decided to add wood importing and distribution service as their new business goal as well. In addition, appointing Park Keun-Hee, the vice president of CJ, as the president of CJ Logistics and the re-appointing Park Keun-Tae, the current president of CJ Logistics, as a co-representative got on the agenda.
